Arthur J. Gunderson, Jr., 83, of Sheboygan, passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 at Sharon S. Richardson Hospice. Arthur was born May, 2, 1929 in Chicago to the late Arthur Sr. and Doris (Dixon) Gunderson. He served his country in the United States Air Force. On April 13, 1951, he married the former Betty Buxton in Merced, California. She preceded him in death on February 27, 2009. Arthur worked as a firefighter and then as fire chief before retiring in 1979. Arthur was interested in history, enjoyed reading and woodworking. Survivors include his two daughters, Laura Schaefer, Howard and Karin (David) Pierce, Sheboygan; two grandsons, Stefan (Maureen) Schaefer and Joshua (Terri) Schaefer; four great-grandchildren, Samantha, Pierce, Noah and Riley; one sister, Marilyn (Ernest) Lee and one brother-in-law, Frank Drechsler. Nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister Jean Drechsler and son-in-law, Joseph Schaefer. A memorial service for Arthur will be held on Friday, December 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Zimmer's Westview Funeral and Cremation Care Center (Hwy 42 & JJ, Howards Grove) with the Rev. DuWayne Hanke officiating. Friends may call on Friday at the funeral home from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service. The family would prefer memorials be given in Arthur's name to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice. The family would like to thank the staff of Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice and St. Nicholas Home Healthcare and Hospice for the exceptionally kind and compassionate care they gave to Arthur.
