Joann Reinertsen

d. December 17, 2012

Joann Pauline Johnson Reinertsen, 82, of Elkhart Lake, WI, died peacefully at home on December 17, 2012, surrounded by her family. Joann was born October 12, 1930 in Ishpeming, MI to the late Ogden and Illian (Youngert) Johnson. On June 13, 1953 she married John Reinertsen at the Augustana College Chapel, Rock Island, IL. A graduate of Augustana College, Joann was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and began her career as a speech pathologist. She made her home for most of her adult life in Evanston, IL, and Salt Lake City, UT. Upon the birth of her children, she chose to devote her life to her family and many others in numerous volunteer capacities for her church, the board of education, girl scouts, the fine arts museum, and the university. A talented musician, she sang in the Augustana Choir, the semi-professional choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Evanston, and the Utah Chorale, performing with the Utah Symphony. In addition, she accompanied numerous vocal ensembles and instrumentalists on the piano. A gifted writer and speaker, she was roundly admired for her insight and eloquence. She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, John, her son John (Kayce), her daughter Carolyn (Thomas Gruba) , and her grandsons, John, Charles, Jeffrey and David. With her brilliant mind and her tender heart she inspired and cared for us all. She was a woman devoted to others, ever interested and concerned for their well-being. Elegant and gracious, she was the consummate hostess; dignified and diplomatic, she put everyone at ease. Her love of literature and the natural world, combined with her physical stamina, made her an indefatigable student of the outdoors whose curiosity and pleasure were never satiated. Services will be private; memorials may be given to the charity of choice. Please visit zimmerfuneralhome.com to send e-mail condolences.
