Delano "Del" E. Hamann, age 83, of Sheboygan, died Tuesday evening, March 7, 2017 at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice in Sheboygan Falls.
Del was born on March 6, 1934, in the town of Sheboygan Falls to Martin and Ruth (Brockman) Hamann. He was named for Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the President at the time of his birth. The family received an acknowledgment of his name from the White House. Del grew up on the family farm and graduated from Sheboygan Falls High School in 1952. He attended Wisconsin Teacher's College - Oshkosh (now UW-Oshkosh) for two years. Del then served his country in the US Air Force from 1954 - 1958. He was stationed at various bases in the United States and also in Iceland. For the next four years, he served in the Air Force Reserves.
On September 3, 1955, Del was united in marriage with Audrey Schneider, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sheboygan. Audrey preceded him in death on December 23, 2011.
Del was employed at Grube Pharmacy in Sheboygan for twenty-seven years and later worked for Health Call Inc. in Milwaukee and The F. Dohmen Co. in Germantown. During his retirement, he worked at Blackwolf Run and Lakeland Motors.
Music, singing and playing his accordion were a huge part of Del's life. In his early years, he was a member of the Kraft Mixed Choir and the Borden Mixed Choir. For nearly 40 years, Del and Audrey belonged to the Gesangverein Concordia Singing Society. They traveled with the choir to singing competitions and performances across the Midwest. They also made several trips with the choir to Europe and performed in Germany and Austria. During his tenure, Del served on the board in all executive capacities.
Del is survived by his daughter, Julie (Kurt) Raymond of Waukesha; his son-in-law, Ron Brey of Sheboygan; three grandchildren, Eric (Jamie) Raymond of Appleton, Mollie (Dustin) Ver Velde of Hingham, and Mallory (Denny Bouchareune) Brey of Schaumburg, IL; four great-grandchildren, Emma and Oliver Raymond and Jackson and Taylor Ver Velde; a sister-in-law, Donna Hamann; and nieces Susan Colby, Sharon Hensel and Sara Hamann.
In addition to his parents and wife, Audrey, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa Brey; and brothers, Vernon (Bernetta) Hamann and Harold Hamann.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Ballhorn Funeral Chapels and Cremation Care Center. Rev. Gregory S. Whelton, Pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, will officiate. Full military honors will then be accorded to Del. A time of visitation and support will be held from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his name for St. John's United Church of Christ.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice for the compassionate care that they provided to Del during his stay.
