Gary Lee Plummer
1948-2025
Kind and gentle, with a quick wit, countless stories, and a knack for making you smile. To those heartbroken by Gary Plummer’s death, none can forget his sincere love and sense of humor. Just before his sudden passing from complications of pulmonary fibrosis, Gary managed to crack jokes, hold his son Steve’s hand tightly, and tell everyone who surrounded his hospital bed that he loved them.
Gary Lee Plummer, 77 of Sheboygan, WI, was born April 19, 1948, in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to his father, Sam Plummer from Kentucky, and his mom, June Fergot from Wisconsin.
Gary grew up in Crandon, WI, where he formed friendships that lasted his lifetime. He graduated from Crandon High School and then attended UW-Superior before going to work as a skilled welder, spending most of his career at Hayssen Manufacturing and more than 20 years at The Vollrath Company, where he retired in 2010. Gary served as a Union Steward (UAW 1472) and maintained strong friendships with his union family. He also spent 17 years as a volunteer firefighter for the Black River Fire Department.
Family was a fuel for Gary, who raced off-road buggies for many years on a team with his brothers-in-law, Ed and John Schultz. Racing weekends were a family ritual with kids, siblings, aunts, uncles, in-laws, and grandparents in attendance. Gary was known to spend hours working on fixes and tune-ups of the buggy, only to hand it over to his sons, Joe and Steve, and his daughter-in-law, Amy, to drive, enjoy, and in some cases roll over. The friends Gary met on the track were lifelong. The stories and memories are endless.
Whether on the soccer, softball or football fields, cheering family and friends, or at the weekly game of sheepshead, Gary always showed up to support those he loved and, in cards, was good at taking his friends’ money. He also loved spending time in the outdoors, deer hunting with his dad, brothers, Ray and Jay, and his brothers-in-law.
Gary was devoted to his sons, Steve and Joe, who died at the age of 20 from leukemia. Once Gary had resolved his time was short, he found peace knowing he would soon be with Joe.
Gary is survived by his brother Jay Gobert, his son Steve Plummer, his daughter-in-law Amy Haese, and grandchildren Zach Plummer, Bella Plummer, and Rhett Plummer. He has many nieces and nephews who can all recount unforgettable moments with “Uncle Gary.”
Gary is predeceased by his parents, Sam and June, his brother Ray Plummer, his son Joe Plummer, his niece Pam Plummer, and his great-nephew Joseph Larson.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2025 at Ballhorn Chapels, 1201 N. 8th St. in downtown Sheboygan, with Reverend Beth Petzke officiating. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens, 7411 Sauk Trail Rd, Sheboygan, immediately following services.
