Marilyn L. Mandel

Marilyn Louise Mandel, 89, died on September 22, 2023, with family at her side.  She was born August 6, 1934, the daughter of the late Elmer B. and Leona (Starck) Scheib and was a 1952 graduate of Sheboygan North High School.  Following graduation, Marilyn was employed by Wisconsin Power and Light Co. as a cashier and part-time secretary.  On December 4th, 1954, she was united in marriage to Richard C. Mandel, Jr. by her uncle, Rev. John Scheib of Kaukauna, at Zion Reformed Church as the new St. John’s E & R Church was under construction.

After raising her family, Marilyn was employed by the Sheboygan Area School District at Cooper and Pigeon River Schools as a Teacher’s Aide for 18 years.  Following those enjoyable years, she worked part-time at B’loonie Gift Shop.

Marilyn was a lifetime member of St. John’s U.C.C. in Sheboygan, where she had been active in Women’s Guild, Senior Choir, Christmas Service Club, and Mother’s & Others for many years.  She also taught Sunday School for 20 years and served on various church committees in her younger years.

Marilyn enjoyed growing flowers, crafts, reading, watching backyard birds visit their feeders, sports, summer cottage vacations, and helping to plan high school reunions.  Those Marilyn leave behind include her husband of 68 years, Dick; four children, Michael (Nancy) Mandel of Plymouth, WI, Todd (Patti) Mandel of Barron, WI, Terri (James) Lee of Cave Creek, Arizona, and Jeffrey Mandel of Marshfield, WI; eight grandchildren, Ryan Mandel, Kristi (Darren) Lentz, Daina (Dustin) Drath, Jennifer and Matthew Lee, Aaron (Breanna), Jarred, and Noah Mandel; two step-grandchildren, Tosten and Natalie Schmitt; six great-grandchildren Nicholas and Nadia Mandel, Kinley, Jayda, & Knox Drath and Cash Mandel; her sister, Sandra (William) Lind; her sister-in-laws, Pamela Scheib and Marion Rieboldt; her brother-in-law Pete Vercouteren, and nieces, nephews, other relatives & friends.

In addition to her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Richard, Sr. and Eleonora Mandel, her brother James Scheib, her sister Barbara (Scheib) Vercouteren, two special cousins Rev. Calvin Helming and Roger Helming, brother/sister-in-law Rodney and Elaine Buss, and brother-in-law Ned Rieboldt.

A Memorial service for Marilyn will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at St. John’s U.C.C., N. 13th Street and Lincoln Ave., Sheboygan, WI.  Rev. Judine Duerwaechter will officiate and burial will follow at Lutheran Cemetery, Sheboygan.

The Mandel Family will greet relatives and friends at church on Saturday, September 30, 2023 from 1:00p.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice or St. John’s U.C.C. are appreciated. The Ballhorn Funeral Home has been entrusted with Marilyn’s arrangements.  Marilyn’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, Dr. Marshall Matthews and the entire staff at Medical Oncology Associates for their kind and compassionate care provided to Marilyn.
